Mornington Wilderness Camp - Family, Flights, Fantastic Times

So after sunning ourselves at Broome for a couple of days it was onto the mighty Gibb River Road with our first stop being the Mornington Wilderness Camp located at the Western end of the Kimberly. For those who are not in the know the Gibb is a 600km shortcut from the West Kimberly to the East Kimberly, now with most shortcuts there is a but and the but is that it is a dirt road that can be anything from a highway to a corrugated goat track that has a fearsome reputation for destroying tyres and shaking both vehicles and caravans alike apart.
So with a top up of fuel in Derby and a bit of pressure out of the tyres fingers crossed away we went heading for Mornington. The first part of the Gibb tricked us and we were cruising along quite easily and next thing we knew we were at the turnoff to the Mornington access road, so after speaking to our niece and host for the week Samantha (Sam) down we went and 2 hours of twist and turns later we made it for an in the dark setup and a quick drink at the bar before bed. We also got our second surprise the temp dropped to 5 degrees and it was bloody freezing overnight.

The next day we decided for a bit of a rest day that involved some swimming at Cadjeput water hole. Sam had also planned sunset drinks for us after a drive but as we found out a little surprise was in order.
The Swimming hole

As it turns out our Sam has caught the eye of the local Helicopter pilot and the sunset drive turned into an amazing sunset flight

The next day after our amazing flight and then dinner at the Restaurant with Sam and Greg we did what you do in the Kimberly visited more waterholes and Gorges for swimming

Mornington is renowned for its bird life and did not disappoint see below for a couple of the more interesting locals we encountered on our stay.

But alas all good things must come to and end and we had another 400km of dirt to explore so we said goodbye to Mornington and continued our journey. Thanks a million Sam and Greg for making our stay the highlight of the trip so far
